The newspaper quoted a statement released Monday by the Public Security Police (PSP) of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) as saying that the attempt was a bid to test the readiness of the three regions' security forces in the lead-up to the Asian Games, scheduled for Nov 12 to Nov 27.

According to the PSP, in the scenario, the Guangdong authorities received information that an international terrorist group was planning a terrorist attack in the Chinese mainland, and would launch their attempt from Hong Kong, attempting to cross the border into the mainland by sea.

The information was sent immediately to the police in Hong Kong, which later uncovered that two terrorist groups were intending to illegally enter the mainland using two boats carrying supplies and equipment to carry out "sabotage actions".

The scenario was launched at 3:00 pm Monday, with a suspicious boat detected by the Guangdong authorities in Dapeng Bay near Shenzhen, while the Macao authorities identified a car heading for the Hengqin Lotus Bridge border checkpoint.

Police swooped on the suspected terrorist targets, seizing equipment that could be used to carry out a lethal attack.
