Ex-world champion Pettigrew died of overdose: autopsy

Former 400m world champion Antonio Pettigrew died in August of an antihistamine overdose, a state autopsy report said on Wednesday.

The death was ruled a suicide with "diphenhydramine toxicity" as the cause, according to the autopsy and an accompanying investigation report released by the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner's office.

"A lethal concentration of diphenhydramine was detected in central and peripheral blood specimens," the autopsy said.

Pettigrew, 42, was an assistant track and field coach at the University of North Carolina and a 2000 Olympian who was stripped of his 4x400 meter relay gold medal after admitting to doping. He also was the 1991 400 meter world champion.

He was found unresponsive by friends in the back seat of his vehicle in rural central North Carolina on Aug 10.

Bayern suffers another blow with Klose injury news

Ailing German champion Bayern Munich suffered another blow on Wednesday as it was announced striker Miroslav Klose would miss the next two matches with a left thigh injury.

The 32-year-old - who took his international tally to 58 in 105 matches when he scored in the 3-0 Euro 2012 qualifier victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday - will miss the league match with Hanover on Saturday and next Tuesday's Champions League clash with Romanian outfit Cluj.

Klose - who has scored six goals in four qualifiers this season but failed to find the net in seven league games - joins Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel on the treatment table following the Euro qualifiers.

Bayern is already without star Dutch winger Arjen Robben - who was Bundesliga player of the season last term - and French playmaker Franck Ribery, both of whom are also injured.

Chelsea midfielder Benayoun sidelined for six months

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun will be out of action for six months with an Achilles' tendon injury discovered on international duty, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

The Israeli, who will undergo surgery on Monday, suffered a calf injury in Chelsea's League Cup defeat by Newcastle on Sept 22.

When he arrived for international duty before Israel's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Croatia and Greece, however, a scan revealed a torn Achilles' tendon.

"The Israeli international returned to the club from international duty last week and will now be out of action for approximately six months," said a statement on his club's website.

Benayoun, 30, joined Chelsea in July after spending three seasons with Liverpool and has scored one goal for his new club.
