GZ Asian Games, Asian Para Games to cost over $18b

GUANGZHOU - The total investment of the Guangzhou Asian Games and Asian Para Games will come to about 122.6 billion yuan ($18.37 billion), Wan Qingliang, mayor of south China's Guangzhou city where the Games will be hosted said on Wednesday.

Infrastructure building including the construction of Guangzhou's metro system, roads, environment protection and water treatment projects in preparation for the games accounted for 109 billion yuan ($16.33 billion) of the investment, Wan said.

About 6.3 billion yuan ($944 million) is expected to be spent on the Games' 70 venues, of which 12 are new and 58 are existing building that have been modified or expanded. Another 7.3 billion yuan ($1.09 billion) will be spent on the Games' operation, he said.

The Asian Games is scheduled to open on Nov 12, 2010. During the 15-day Games, a total of 10,156 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions will compete in 476 events in 42 different sports. The Asian Para Games will start on Dec 12, 2010.
