Coach asks star to slow it down
By Tang Yue (China Daily)
Updated: 2009-09-24 11:05 JINAN, Shandong province: Liu Xiang proved he was in world-class form with a spectacular 13.15-second clocking in his comeback race from a foot injury at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix meet on Sunday. However, his coach has told China Daily not to expect a similar effort at the National Games as he has asked Liu to 'play it safe' and protect his foot. "Such a high speed in Shanghai was a little bit too risky for his foot," Sun Haiping said. "We'll keep his speed in control at the upcoming National Games. Besides, there are not many world-class competitors for Liu to face at the National Games, which means he doesn't have to do his utmost." Liu is now preparing for the all-important National Games at which the final of 110m hurdles is scheduled for Oct 26. As the defending champion, he is again tipped to win the title with ease.
Many Chinese believe Liu is ready to challenge the world again but Sun is asking the public to be patient. "Liu Xiang has not reached his highest level yet. We will have consultations with his doctors at the end of the year," the coach said. "If he's totally recovered, he'll have more intensive training. Safety still comes first for now. "It's not impossible for him to win an international competition at present but we just want to do it step by step," Sun said. "Athletes' careers depend on their health; I have to be 100 percent sure of his recovery." |
