WASHINGTON: Tommy Haas blasted 19 aces to defeat Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 on Thursday and advance to the quarter-finals of the $1.4 million ATP Washington Classic.

The German veteran improved to 18-4 since May and will face the winner of a later match between Chilean fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez and American Wayne Odesnik for a semi-final berth in the US Open hardcourt tuneup event.

Spaniard Ferrero, a former world number one who lost a clay final Sunday in Croatia, saved only 1-of-5 break points against 31-year-old Haas, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Roger Federer.
