Benfica routs Maritimo to go top in Portugal

LISBON, Portugal _ Benfica routed a 10-man Maritimo 6-0 on Sunday to move top of the Portuguese league for the first time in more than three years.

Nuno Gomes and David Suazo scored two goals each, while defender Luisao added another in the 65th minute. Jose Antonio Reyes had opened the scoring at Barreiros stadium with a 20th-minute penalty.

Maritimo's Marcos Oliveira was red-carded after 16 minutes to give Benfica the advantage.

Benfica, which hasn't been top of the standings since May 2005, is unbeaten after 11 games to lead with 25 points. Leixoes, on 23, can reclaim top spot with a victory against Guimaraes on Monday.

Maritimo is sixth on 18 points after its eight-game unbeaten run was ended.

Also Sunday, Rio Ave moved up from last place to 12th in the 16-team division with a 2-0 win over Naval, courtesy of goals from striker Jose Filipe Semedo and midfielder Antonio Livramento.

On Monday, Trofense plays Braga.

Sporting Lisbon is third with 22 points, two more than FC Porto and Nacional.
