Despite being outplayed at home for much of the second leg, Internacional snatched an injury-time equalizer to draw 1-1 against Argentine's Estudiantes and won 2-1 on aggregate.

Internacional became the first Brazilian team to win the trophy, the region's equivalent of the UEFA Cup, in its six-year history.

"I'm very happy. I have never won an international title and I just did it with my club," Internacional's Argentine player Andres D'Alessandro told reporters on Thursday.

"This is a big award for me, for all that I did with my club and my family," he said.

Another Argentine player Pablo Guinazu added that the title is "nice and well-deserved".
