DONETSK, Ukraine - A hat-trick from Brazilian Jadson secured Shakhtar Donetsk a place in the UEFA Cup when they thumped Basel 5-0 to take third place in Group C of the Champions League with a game to spare on Wednesday.

Jadson broke a dull deadlock in the 32nd minute with a sly goal squeezed through the legs of Basel keeper Franco Costanzo after a confident cross from Tomas Hubschman and a light tap from Olexiy Gai.

The unmarked Jadson converted Darijo Srna's pass for his second goal in the 65th and fellow Brazilian Willian provided the ball for a powerful shot from the centre of the box for his third seven minutes later.

Willian himself scored an impressive goal in the 50th minute after weaving and twisting past two defenders to shoot inside the far post. Substitute Yevgen Seleznov struck his first European goal to make it five in the 75th.

It was Shakhtar's second win in the group after a 2-1 victory in Basel in September but neither team had the possibility of reaching the last 16 after Barcelona and Sporting had already qualified. Basel are bottom with one point.
