WASHINGTON -- Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich had undergone a surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the National Basketball Association team said Tuesday.

Hinrich is expected to miss about three months of the season.

The sixth-year veteran left Friday's 100-83 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the third quarter after sustaining the injury.

Hinrich said he was hurt when he tried to steal the ball from Suns forward Amare Stoudemire.

Hinrich has spent his entire NBA career with Chicago, averaging 14.3 points and 6.3 assists while missing just 21 games over five-plus seasons.
