BANGALORE, India - Australia set India a challenging target of 299 in 83 overs to win the first test on the final day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday.

The touring side declared their second innings on 228 for six after resuming on 193 for five in overcast conditions.

Shane Watson fell for 41 to seamer Ishant Sharma in the second over as Australia looked for quick runs, ending an invaluable sixth-wicket stand of 75 with Brad Haddin.

Haddin remained unbeaten on 35 and debutant Cameron White made 18 as the tourists added 35 runs in five overs before the declaration on a difficult pitch, setting up a potentially exciting finish to the opening test of the four-match series.
