Wallabies agree on World Cup performance bonuses(Reuters)Updated: 2007-07-25 14:31 Australian players will get a cash bonus of 137,000 Australian dollars (US$121,370; euro87,900) if they win the Rugby World Cup in France. The Australian Rugby Union and the Rugby Union Players' Association announced the deal Wednesday, with cash incentives offered for reaching the semifinal and the final. All members of the 30-man squad will be paid A$10,000 (US$8,860; euro6,415) for qualifying for the semifinals, an additional A$42,250 (US$37,435; euro27,111) for reaching the final and an extra A$84,750 (US$75,090; euro54,380) if they win the title. "I think we have found the right formula for rewarding the players," ARU general manager Pat Wilson said in a statement. The players' union and the ARU had a long dispute about bonuses before the 2003 World Cup, but reached agreement months ahead of kick off this time. "The discussions were amicable and productive," Wilson said. The ARU said the bonuses were in line with other top-tier rugby nations which considered themselves contenders for the title. Australia, the World Cup champion in 1991 and '99, lost the final in extra time to England in 2003. Australia is in Group B with Japan, Canada, Wales and Fiji for the World Cup, which will be held predominantly in France in September and October.
