Ambres lifts NY Mets over Dodgers with rare hit(Reuters)Updated: 2007-07-23 15:59 LOS ANGELES, July 22 - Chip Ambres's first Major League hit in almost two years helped the New York Mets eke out a 5-4 road victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 innings on Sunday. Ambres, who has played most of his career in the minor leagues, drove a two-out pitch past Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra to score Lastings Milledge from third with the winning run. "Being able to come through in the clutch like that and help out the team, it's one that I'll always remember," Ambres told reporters. "It's unbelievable. I'm on cloud nine." The hit was Ambres's first in the Major Leagues since September 2005. He did not play in the majors last season and was called up from the minor leagues by the Mets as a fill-in player on Tuesday. "I just wanted to put the ball in play and get that man in from third base," Ambres said. "I'd faced (losing pitcher J.D.) Houlton in Triple-A, and (Mets team mate) Marlon Anderson reminded me of the pitches that he had." The NL East Division-leading Mets trailed 4-2 after seven innings, but used Carlos Beltran's eighth-inning sacrifice fly and a ninth-inning error to tie the score. Anderson Hernandez got the tying run when Dodgers right fielder Matt Kemp dropped Shawn Green's fly ball to shallow right. Billy Wagner struck out Garciaparra with runners on second and third in the bottom of the 10th to end the game. The save was Wagner's 22nd of the year. Home runs accounted for three of the Dodgers runs. Rafael Furcal hit a solo shot in the first inning and Garciaparra had a two-run homer in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. *Ryan Braun and Corey Hart had two-run homers in the first inning and the Milwaukee Brewers scored a 7-5 home win over the San Francisco Giants, who rested slugger Barry Bonds. The Brewers tagged Giants pitcher Barry Zito for seven runs and eight hits in five-plus innings. Bonds is expected to resume his chase of Hank Aaron's home-run record in San Francisco on Monday. With 753 career homers Bonds is two shy of tying Aaron's record. *The St Louis Cardinals broke a 2-2 tie with five runs on two homers in the 10th inning for a 7-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Skip Schumaker delivered a two-run homer and Scott Rolen followed two outs later with a three-run blast. *The Arizona Diamondbacks shut out the Chicago Cubs 3-0 as Yusmeiro Petit struck out five and held the Cubs to three hits over six innings. *Philadelphia's J.D. Durbin pitched his first career shutout, holding the San Diego Padres to five hits in a 9-0 road victory.
