A Japanese teacher has become the oldest person to top the world's highest peak, Mt. Qomolangma after he scaled it on May 22, The Kathmandu Post reported on Wednesday.

The 71-year-old Japanese man Katsusuke Yanagisawa, a retired junior high school teacher from central Japan, was 71 years 2 months and 2 days old when he reached the summit, becoming the oldest Mt. Qomolangma climber so far.

The previous record was set last year by another Japanese, Takao Arayama, who was then 70 years, 7 months and 13 days, the report said.
