The Pan American torch will start its tour on June 5 in the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabralia, Brazil's northeastern coast, the organizing committee of Rio de Janeiro's Pan American Games confirmed on Tuesday.

The torch will be lit on June 4 at the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, in Mexico. Rio mayor Cesar Maia and Brazil's Minister of Sports Orlando Silva will be present at the lighting ceremony, coordinated by the Pan American Sports Organization (ODEPA), headquartered in Mexico City.

Cabralia is part of the so-called Discovery Coast, where the first Portuguese caravels arrived in 1500 to discover and explore Brazil. Porto Seguro, also located in the region, will be the Pan American torch's second stop.

The tour will cover Brazil's 26 state capitals, Brasilia and 22 other municipalities. When the torch arrives in the federal capital on June 11, it will be welcomed by president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the Palacio do Planalto, the government's headquarters.

It is expected to get to Rio on July 13, when the opening ceremony of the 2007 Games is scheduled to take place. The Pan American flame will be lit at the Maracana Stadium, and will burn up to the end of the event, on July 29.
