NEW YORK, May 23 - Brian Hill will not return as the head coach of the Orlando Magic, the club said on its Web site on Wednesday.

"We look forward to taking the next step toward being a championship-caliber team," general manager Otis Smith said in a statement that praised Hill for his disciplined approach, game preparation and attention to detail.

The club said the 59-year-old Hill would have the option of remaining with the franchise in another capacity.

Hill posted a 76-68 record in his second stint as the Magic coach, rejoining the team in May 2005.

The Magic went 40-42 this past season but lost to Detroit in four straight games in the first round of the playoffs.

Hill previously coached the Magic from 1993 through to 1997, posting a 191-104 record. His 1995 team won the Eastern Conference title. He also coached the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1997 through to 2000.
