Canada's Sergerie scores comeback win in women's 63kg(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-05-22 08:30 Karine Sergerie of Cananda came back from 3-0 down to beat Park Hye-Mi of South Korea 4-3 in the extra time for the women's 63kg title on Monday.
After trailing 3-0 in the first two round, the Canadian scored three straight points when Park was on complete defence. Sergerie, runner-up of the 2003 version of the tournament, scored the winning point 57 seconds into the sudden-death round for the victory. The victory denied South Korea's hope to claim a gold for the second day after the powerhouse, who won seven titles in 2005 in Madrid, Spain, winning three gold medals in the first two days. "(When I was trailing,) I kept thinking everything I had put into this tournament. I was not panic. My coach told me to be patient, to wait for the opportunity coming out. I followed his order and I won the game," said Sergerie, who had won a silver and a bronze medals in previous championships. Park stopped 2004 Athens silver-medalist Nia Abdallah of the United States and Su Li-Wen of Chinese Taipei to advance into the finals. She could had bigger leading gap as she was deducted one point for two warnings in the second round, which proved critical for her loss. |
