Indonesian upsets China's Lu Lan(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-05-10 22:13 JAKARTA - Local shuttler Maria Kristin Yulianti beat rising star Lu Lan in the Indonesia Open Super Series Thursday to send another blow to the Chinese squad following the early exit of top seed Xie Xingfang in the women's singles. Maria went through the quarterfinals after a hard fought 15-21 21-16 21-14 win over Lu, last year's finalist in the Indonesian tournament, in their only clash to date. "I had no special tactic to win the match. I just kept the shuttlecock running low and thankfully she made quite many errors, " Maria said of her opponent. "I'm happy to win today but I will not rejoice overly. It often happened in the past when I beat a seeded player from China only to completely fail in the following day," the 21-year-old said in a post-match press conference. In the last-eight stage Friday, she will play Bulgarian Petya Nedeltcheva who beat Pai Min Jie of Chinese Taipei 21-10, 19-21, 21-17. The host team also got a boost from another surprise win of non-seeded player Andre Kurniawan Tedjono over Danish experienced player Kenneth Jonassen in three tough games 23-25, 21-15, 21-15. The Indonesian challenged fourth seed Chen Hong of China who earlier trashed Ng Wei of Hong Kong SAR 19-21, 21-15, 21-15. |
