Local shuttler Taufik Hidayat is making progress on his way to defend the Indonesia Open title as well as break the tournament record of six trophies he now shares with compatriot Ardi Wiranata.

The Olympic champion beat Singapore Super Series champion Bonsaak Ponsana in three tough games in the second round at the Bung Karno Indoor Stadium here Thursday.

Taufik's 21-14, 20-22, 21-14 victory over the Thai top shuttler presented the most thrilling match since the Indonesia Super Series began the main qualifying Wednesday.

The two men entertained the nearly full capacity stadium with cross court smashes, high speed strokes and precise plays on the net.

Despite the loss, it was an amazing performance of Bonzaak who sustained hamstring injury which threatened him to withdraw.

"He is an extraordinary player, he should have withdrawn from the tournament because of the injury," Bonsaak's trainer Atiek Djauhari told a press conference.

"Prior to the match with Taufik, we have discussed a possibility of walking over, but he insisted on trying on the court first then make a decision later," said the Indonesian trainer.

"He did quite well and managed to complete the match with an amazing play."

In the quarterfinals, Taufik will play either compatriot Sony Dwi Kuncoro or Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong SAR.
