Uganda to get Indian cricket coach(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-05-10 09:44
Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has decided to get an Indian cricket coach to boost the performance of the national team. UCA chairman William Kibuka-Musoke confirmed that the association had reached an understanding with the Indian community to get a coach through the Indian High Commission. "The onus is on us to tell them when we need him. He is supposed to be here for six months each year for three years. He will help all the national teams and also train other local coaches. He is yet to be named," said Kibuka-Musoke, quoted by New Vision on Wednesday. He said that the Indian community promised to give Uganda a former senior cricketer and a coach in the Ranji trophy, the Indian national league, who he summed up as someone that Uganda really requires to boost its performance. "We are currently at the lowest division and we need someone to boost us. Any offer of such a type will be a great boost. What they need from us is accommodation and facilitation for his different assignments," added Kibuka-Musoke. Uganda is one of the eight teams preparing to compete at the ICC Division Three cricket event scheduled for May 27 - June 2 in Australia. Tanzania, USA, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Oman Republic, Malaysia, Cayman Island and Fiji are the other seven teams that will take part in the one-week competition. After a poor show at the 2007 World Cup qualifiers in Ireland in 2005, Uganda who finished bottom of the 12-nation championship was relegated to Division Three together with USA and PNG. Only the top two teams in Division Three will qualify to play in Division Two, when five of the ten teams will qualify to play at the 2011 World Cup alongside the test playing nations. The Indian cricket team has been highly ranked in both Test cricket and One-Day Internationals. The team won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and was runners-up in 2003. The current team contains many of the world's leading players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, who hold numerous cricketing world records. In November 2006, the team is ranked fourth in the ICC Test Championship and in sixth place in the ICC ODI Championship. The team was ousted from the 2007 Cricket World Cup tournament in the group stages following an abysmal performance. |
