IMAX film on Mt. Qomolangma to be produced again
(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-04-24 14:09 Following the success of their IMAX (Image Maximum) film on Mt. Qomolangma a decade ago, the " IMAX Everest" (Qomolangma) Team is back in Nepal to shoot the sequel "Return to Everest", Nepali local media reported on Monday. According to eKantipur.com website report, the nine-member team comprising two chief characters of the earlier film Jamling Tenjing Norgey Sherpa, son of the first Mt. Qomolangma summitteer Tenjing Norgey Sherpa and the first Spanish woman climber Araceli Segavra set out for the Mt. Qomolangma Base Camp on Sunday. This time, the team is using 3D (3-Dimensional) technology to film the expedition. This is the first time the 3D technology is to be used to film the world's highest altitude. Talking to local media, the director and producer of IMAX Film of Los Angeles, USA Greg MacGillivray said "We will include all the technical developments required of a climbing expedition and the changes around it in the last 10 years, on film." In the first film they had incorporated all expedition activities up to the summit, the challenging aspects found there and also Sherpa culture of the area. However, this time the team may not reach the summit due to the weight of the equipment including the IMAX 3D camera which weighs over 113 kg, making it extremely difficult to film on-location documentaries. "I feel proud to be here again after 10 years," said Araceli. The cameraman, who had already reached the base camp, came down on Saturday to film Jamling and Araceli. "The second IMAX Everest film will be fruitful for the promotion of tourism in Nepal," said 42-year old climber Jamling. She said that the first part of the film includes Sherpa culture, environment up to the base camp, changed mountaineering skills and the study of human physiology at high altitudes. A British medical team will help in their research. The second phase of the shooting will incorporate shots of the peak of Mt. Qomolangma from helicopter. The film will be released in the U.S. after two years. However, lots of movies were filmed in the last 10 years about Mt. Qomolangma. Recently record holder Appa Sherpa and Lhakpagelu Sherpa are also going to produce a documentary on their Mt. Qomolangma expedition and the unique Sherpa culture. The first "IMAX Everest" film produced in 1996 at a cost of 8 million U.S. dollars had been screened in 180 IMAX theaters in 27 countries around the world. The film reportedly earned some 1.36 billion U.S. dollars.
