WBA flyweight champion Takefumi Sakata will make the first defence of his title against interim champion Roberto Vasquez of Panama on July 1 in Tokyo, the Japanese fighter's Kyoei Gym said.

The fight will take place at Ariake Colosseum, Japan's Kyodo news agency reported.

Sakata (30-4-1) took the title in March when Venezulean Lorenzo Parra's corner threw in the towel early in the third round of their fight, citing an injury.

Vasquez (24-1-0) and Sakata fought each other for the interim title in December last year, when Parra was out of action after undergoing knee surgery, with the Panamanian taking a split decision.

"There's no need for two belts in the WBA flyweight (division). I'll prove that I'm the undisputed champion in the ring," Sakata said.
