Russia's Galperin breaks China's diving stranglehold(Reuters)Updated: 2007-03-26 08:15
China's stranglehold on the diving at the world championships was finally ended on Sunday when Russia's Gleb Galperin won the men's 10m platform title. After Guo Jingjing had earlier sealed China's seventh straight gold medal in the women's 3m springboard, Galperin produced a sublime series of dives to deny the Chinese duo of Zhou Luxin and Lin Yue. Galperin, who won bronze in Montreal in 2005, was trailing Lin until the fourth round when he completed his second consecutive dive earning the maximum 10 points from each of the seven judges. Two more solid dives to conclude his programme saw him to a comfortable victory with 554.70 points from Zhou (519.15) in silver and Lin (513.70) bronze. Guo created history by becoming the first person to win a gold medal at the same event for a fourth consecutive world championships when she edged out team mate Wu Minxia. She led from the first dive of the final before winning with a tally of 381.75 points from Wu (368.80) with Italy's Tania Cagnotto third (341.70). "I've never thought about it," the 25-year-old said of her new record. "I just want to keep doing my best at competitions. "It has always been an important event. However, this might be my last world championships." Despite her continued success at the highest level, Guo was still sheepish about her chances of victory in the Beijing Olympics next year. "I think my biggest rival will be myself, but I really don't want to think about it. The thought of being there simply scares me at this stage." |
