IOC awards Jamaican PM "Women and Sport" Trophy

LAUSANNE - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded its 2007 World "Women and Sport" Trophy to Jamaica's first female Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller here on Thursday.

Miller was honored for her outstanding dedication to promoting the participation of women in Jamaican sports - both as athletes and as administrators.

Also five continental "Women and Sport" trophies were awarded to Fridah Bilha Shiroya from Kenya, Jackie Joyner-Kersee from United States of America, Naila Shatara-Kharroub from Palestine, Ilse Bechthold from Germany and Veitu Apana Diro from Papua New Guinea.

As well as the World Trophy, the continental trophies are presented to women who have made outstanding contributions to strengthen the participation of women and girls in the sports world.

The ceremony took place at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. On this occasion, IOC President Jacques Rogge announced that the 4th World Conference on Women and Sport will take place in March 2008 in Jordan.
