IAAF to provide cash incentives for Mombasa winners(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-03-01 09:43 The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will reward the men and women senior category winners at the Mombasa World Cross Country Championships with US$280,000, the local Daily Nation reported Wednesday. In a press release, the IAAF said it hoped the enthusiasm shown by the residents of Mombasa, southeastern Kenya, who witnessed the opening of the secretariat, would be replicated in the championships. "If further inspiration is required then the runners need to look no further than the substantial financial incentives on offer," said the release. However, the championships back to the one day format will not give more reward for juniors. Winners in the 12km and 8km men and women races will each receive 30,000 dollars, already the highest ever to be paid to an individual locally. Position six will fetch 3,000 dollars. On top of this, winning team will receive 20,000 dollars. The senior men's team will have nine athletes of which six will score????for team points while the women will have six with four to score. Runners-up will get about 14,000 dollars and third 10,000, fourth 7,000, fifth 5,000 and sixth 3,000. But all prize winners must undergo the usual anti-doping procedure before they get their money within 90 days. The Kenyan national team runners will each get 500 Kenyan shillings (about US$7) daily allowances which will be increased to 40 dollars from the day they travel |
