China sweeps Winter Asiad freestyle skiing aerials titles(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-02-01 15:24 JILIN, Northeast China - Chinese freestyle skiers jumped on top of Asia as they had no trouble in sweeping both men's and women's aerials titles at the 6th Asian Winter Games at the Beidahu ski resort.
Olympic champion Han Xiaopeng pulled out two superb jumps in a field of eight athletes to claim his first Asiad gold medal on Thursday. World champion and Olympic silver medalist Li Nina won the women's aerials without a hitch on Wednesday. "Chinese skiers are too good for the opponents and we have a handful of top athletes for aerials," said Rao Gang, team leader of the Chinese freestyle squad. "The youngsters are also catching up." Han's teammates Qiu Sen, Liu Zhongqing and Li Ke finished second to fourth respectively on the scoreboard. Fifth-ranked Japanese Kotaro Kurata shared the bronze medal with Liu according to the OCA rules that one team can not sweep all medals in freestyle skiing. "The Chinese skiers are great, it is hard to beat them now," said Kurata, the number one aerials skier in Japan. The Chinese women also had a clean sweep of the top four in the five-skier field on the scoreboard with Maral Unenbat of Mongolia sharing the bronze with Chinese athlete. Han came to spotlight at the Turin Winter Olympics by claiming the men's aerials title, but he did not hit the top gear in last year's World Cup series, winning second place in Beidahu and Spindleruv, Czech Republic, respectively. "I did not ski my best and the strong wind also affected my performance. I am very happy with the result and I think it was a little bit luck as my teammates all had chance to win," said Han, now ranked fifth in the world. "I did not feel stressed at the Turin Games, but this time I am a little bit nervous because the Winter Asiad was held on home soil," added Han, who failed to show the best form in the first jump. "My leg still hurt a lot when I was landing, so I have to treat my wound seriously. Many other important competitions are waiting ahead." "My next goal will be the World Championships, I have prepared for that," added Han, who started the 2007 campaign with a second place finish at the Deer Valley World Cup series in the United States on January 12. Compared to Han Xiaopeng, Li Nina had to battle with the strong wind and heavy snow on Wednesday. "It is not an easy win under such bad weather, and my teammates are all excellent in the match. I did not jump in the best form but I am happy with the result," said the 24-year-old Li after the match. "Racing at home made me much more nervous as I have to compete with my teammates, while in Europe we are working in a team." |
