Baseball-Suppan ready to join Brewers after passing physical
(Reuters)Updated: 2006-12-30 14:46 Right-hander Jeff Suppan was ready to sign a four-year, $42 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers after passing his physical on Friday. Suppan, 31, has a 106-101 record in 12 major league seasons with a 4.60 ERA. He was 12-7 with a 4.12 ERA for the World Series champion St Louis Cardinals last season and was named MVP of the 2006 National League Championship Series after allowing one earned run over two starts against the New York Mets. "Will there be any extra pressure? There could be," Suppan told a conference call. "But there could not be. I don't really know. "I've never really made this kind of money, and it's a new organization so there are always going to be different things distracting you. "As a pitcher or a player, you have to learn how to deal with distractions. That's what I try to do." Suppan will sign the contract, the largest in Brewers' history, when the team files paperwork with the players' union next week. The Brewers and Suppan came to terms on Christmas Eve but the free agent deal was contingent on the pitcher passing a physical. Milwaukee was 75-87 last season and finished in fourth place in the NL Central Division. |
