BRUSSELS - Motocross world champion Stefan Everts and women's tennis world No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne has been named Belgium's sportsman and sportswoman of the year, Belgian media reported Monday.

This was the fifth time Everts was conferred the honor by sports journalists. Everts, who rounded off an impressive career with his tenth world motocross title in 2006, came in ahead of former world cycling champion Tom Boonen, who won the honor last year.

Everts won almost every race he competed in during the 2006 season.

Speaking after picking up his award Sunday, Everts said it was " fantastic" to win the award, and the trophy will be given "a special place" in his trophy cabinet.

Henin-Hardenne, who won the French Open title and the WTA Championship this year, was awarded sportswoman of the year for the third time in four years.

Belgian sprinter Kim Gevaert and high jumper Tia Hellebaut came second and third respectively.

Henin-Hardenne, who entered the final of every Grand Slam this year, climbed up to the No. 1 ranking last month.

Henin-Hardenne was also a member of the Belgian Fed Cup team, which reached the final this year when it lost to Italy.

The Belgian Fed Cup team was given the award for best team of the year.
