Chinese boxers punching weight, win two golds(Reuters)Updated: 2006-12-14 09:01 DOHA - China's boxers collected two gold medals on Wednesday, bringing their tally to three in the 32-year history of the event at the Asian Games.
Zou Shiming outclassed Thailand's Suban Pannon to win the light flyweight final before Hu Qing won gold in the lightweight division. The 25-year-old world champion Zou was also his country's first Olympic boxing medallist when he won a bronze in the same division in Athens two years ago. Zou outscored his Thai navy officer opponent by 21 points to one when the referee declared the contest over after one minute, 36 seconds of round two. "I didn't expect win so easily," said Zou, who comes from Guizhou. "I thought this match would be very tough. "Yesterday I was very nervous. Last night I did not sleep ... and I did not eat. "I won the world championships, I have now won the Asian (Games) and now my aim is to win the Olympics." Suban, the Asian Games champion on home soil in 1998 and bronze medallist in Pusan four years ago, was surprised by the speed of his opponent. "He is very fast," he said. "When I punched him, he found a way to punch me back. He is a very good boxer." Hu, a 20-year-old from the impoverished Anhui province, beat Mongolia's Munkh Erdine Uranchimeg 38-22 in his final. China's only previous Asian Games boxing champion was Bai Chongguang, who won the light heavyweight title at the Beijing Games 16 years ago. |
