The Philippine government on Tuesday lauded the performance of its billiards team taking part in the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said he hopes that the victories would lead to more medals for the Philippines.

Early Tuesday morning, Filipino cue master Antonio Gabica bagged the country's first gold medal in the quadrennial meet, with an 11-7 victory over compatriot Jeffrey de Luna in the men's 9-ball event. De Luna won the silver medal.

Prior to his victory, Gabica also won the silver medal in the men's 8-ball contest.

Going into the 11th day of the Games, the Philippines won one gold, four silver and six bronze medals, ranking 22nd place in the medal tally.
