Bench players help Bobcats upstage Detroit

Reserves Sean May and Matt Carroll combined for 33 points off the bench as the Charlotte Bobcats ended the Detroit Pistons' eight-game winning streak with a 97-89 win in Charlotte on Sunday.

May had 17 points and Carroll added 16 for the Bobcats, as their bench players out-scored the Detroit reserves 46-14 to snap a two-game losing streak as Charlotte continued its success against elite NBA teams.

Despite a 5-12 overall record, the Bobcats have beaten San Antonio, Cleveland and now Detroit this season, handing the Pistons their first loss since November 15.

Detroit (11-6) shot just 41 percent from the field while the Bobcats shot 49 percent, including 6-for-13 from three-point range, with May making seven of the 10 shots he attempted.

Emeka Okafor led the Bobcats in scoring with 18 points and had eight rebounds, as Charlotte came back after trailing by one point at the half.

Raymond Felton chipped in with 15 points for the Bobcats, while Brevin Knight had a solid all-round game with eight points, 14 rebounds and seven assists.

Rasheed Wallace led the Pistons with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton both scored 17 for the losers.

*Ricky Davis scored 22 points, including 14 in the pivotal fourth quarter, and Kevin Garnett added 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves past the Philadelphia 76ers 95-84.

*Joe Johnson scored 33 points, helping the Atlanta Hawks beat the Portland TrailBlazers 107-96. Zach Randolph had 30 points in a losing cause for Portland.
