Malaysia surpasses gold target in FESPIC Games
(Xinhua)Updated: 2006-11-27 16:45 Host nation Malaysia on Monday has surpassed their target of hauling 10 gold medals in the ongoing ninth Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled ( FESPIC Games). In the Games, also known as KL'06, which opened Saturday, Malaysia has bagged 11 gold medals from track and field, lawn bowls, weight lifting and swimming. "It is very encouraging. This is only the third day of the Games and we have surpassed the target," said Malaysian Paralympic Council acting president Zainal Abu Zarin. Zainal, who is also the Games chief executive officer, said despite the lack of financial sponsors to run the Games, the Malaysian athletes have so far put up a commendable performance. "This shows promise not only for the disabled in the country but also to sponsors who were reluctant to come in to assist in the running of the Games," he added. The Malaysian delegation aims to seize 100 medals including 10 gold, and to rank among the top 10 on the medal standings.
