Golf-Koreans Yang and Ho picked for Asia's Royal Trophy team(Reuters)Updated: 2006-11-14 15:14 Champions Tournament winner Yang Yong-eun of South Korea and compatriot SK Ho have been picked for Asia's team to play against Europe at next year's Royal Trophy, organisers said on Tuesday. Ho, who has won seven Japan Tour titles this year, and Yang are the first players to be named on Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki's eight-man team for the matchplay event. Yang fired a closing 69 in Shanghai to beat world number one Tiger Woods on Sunday, a win that saw him climb 39 places to 38th in the world rankings. He said his two-stroke victory came as a surprise and that he would adopt the same approach for the Royal Trophy in Bangkok in eight weeks time. "Now I think that if you really put your heart into it and give a 110 per cent, then eventually you'll find a way to win," he said in a statement. "That is the attitude I will take into the Royal Trophy, when we will be up against a formidable European team. I will be able to take a lot of confidence from my win in Shanghai." Ho was a member of the Asian team that lost 9-7 to Europe in the inaugural edition of the contest earlier this year. He said he was delighted to be picked again and was confident Asia could turn the tables on Europe. "During the first Royal Trophy, the Asian team played well and it was a very close contest," he said. "If we could have managed one more point we would have denied the Europeans the victory. We will fight with all our hearts to win this time. "If we can defeat the Europeans it will be a terrific moment for Asian golf." Seve Ballesteros is captain of the Europeans for the second successive year and has already selected four members of the Ryder Cup team that beat the United States in September. Irish pair Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley, and Swedes Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson were Ballesteros's first picks for his eight-man team, with Stenson and McGinley recalled after January's victory. The contest takes place at the Amata Spring Country Club from January 12-14
and will be played in Thailand until 2010. |
