Golf-Goosen fires World team into Goodwill Trophy lead(Reuters)Updated: 2006-11-14 10:41 SHANGHAI, Nov 13- Rest of the World captain Retief Goosen helped his team take a 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 lead over the combined Europe/U.S. side after the first day of the inaugural Goodwill Trophy in Shenzhen on Monday. South African Goosen teamed up with New Zealander Michael Campbell to beat Colin Montgomerie and Chris DiMarco 5 and 4 in the foursomes at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Mission Hills Golf Club. "There was no goodwill shown to us," Europe/U.S. skipper Montgomerie told reporters. "Michael and Retief played very well and were five-under-par after seven while we showed plenty of goodwill with bogeys and double-bogeys." South Korea's K.J. Choi and Thai Thongchai Jaidee defeated Briton Paul Casey and Spain's Alejandro Canizares 3 and 2 while Swede Henrik Stenson and Briton Bradley Dredge won a point back for the Ryder Cup countries by beating Australians Paul Sheehan and Peter Senior 4 and 3. BRILLIANT COMEBACK China's Zhang Lian-Wei and Jeev Milkha Singh of India staged a brilliant comeback to finish all square with Britons Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty after going four down at the turn. "We were cruising after nine holes," said Donald after holing a 15-footer on the final green to ensure he and Dougherty avoided defeat. "But all credit to Zhang and Jeev. They came back strongly." Goosen said: "I'm pleased with the performance of the international team and hope we can build on our good start in the singles tomorrow morning." The highlight of Tuesday's final-day singles is the match between rival skippers Goosen and Montgomerie. The other singles are: Stenson v Singh, Dougherty v Sheehan, DiMarco v Campbell, Casey v Choi, Canizares v Zhang, Dredge v Senior and Donald v Thongchai. The Goodwill Trophy has been developed as a collaborative event between Mission Hills and the Celtic Manor Resort, host of the 2010 Ryder Cup, to enhance trade, tourism and cultural exchange between the U.K. and China through golf. Next year's tournament will be held at the Celtic Manor course in Wales.
