England spinner Monty Panesar was racially abused during the current tour match against New South Wales, a team spokesman said on Tuesday.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph reported that a spectator called Sikh Panesar "a stupid Indian who can't speak English" as he fielded near the boundary on the first day of the game.

"We were asked by the paper to confirm if the incident took place and we have done," the spokesman told the BBC.

"We will continue to monitor the situation but we're not going to make an official complaint at this stage."

Panesar and South African-born batsman Kevin Pietersen also suffered racial abuse during England's opening tour match against the Prime Minster's XI in Canberra on Friday, the spokesman said.

Cricket Australia recently announced tough new guidelines to tackle racial abuse with fans facing lifetime bans if found guilty.
