Boxing-Thai, Japanese fighters triumph in "open scoring" bouts(Reuters)Updated: 2006-11-14 09:58
Thailand's Eagle Kyowa and Japan's Hozumi Hasegawa successfully defended their WBC titles in a Tokyo double-header on Monday night. Eagle held on to his WBC strawweight belt, winning a unanimous decision against Mexican challenger Lorenzo Trejo, while Hasegawa also scored a unanimous decision over Mexico's Genaro Garcia to retain his bantamweight title. The title bouts saw the adoption of "open scoring" -- the announcement of the judges tallies at the end of the fourth and eighth rounds, rather than just at the end of the contest. Open scoring was adopted at the WBC convention in Croatia last month. Japan-based Kyowa improved his win-loss record to 17-1 with the decision at Nippon Budokan. "I hurt my right fist and I didn't have the speed I needed because of a lack of training," Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted Kyowa as saying. "It was hard to determine the pattern of my opponent's punches. I felt that he was very patient and had a wealth of experience. It was a very valuable win but I am not satisfied with my performance." Trejo, on the other hand, was not satisfied with the result. "I thought I won the bout, so I'm very disappointed," he said. Hasegawa, who improved to 21-2, knocked Garcia to the canvas in the fourth and eighth rounds and appeared comfortably ahead throughout.
