Argentina wins five gold medals in S.America Games(Xinhua)Updated: 2006-11-13 16:41 Argentina won five gold medals on Sunday, standing atop of the medals table at the eighth South American Games in the fourth day of competition that runs until Sunday next week in Argentine capital Buenos Aires and nearby coastal city Mar del Plata. Fernada Lauro won gold in the individual 200-meter kayak, and the pairs 200-meter kayak, alongside compatriot Marcela Codarin; after Brazil's pairs team was disqualified for having a boat that was lighter than regulation weight. Watersports events are held in the Sierra de los Padres Lagoon, 20 kms from Mar del Plata. Pablo Alvarez won the 50 meters individual rifle shoot, and also the pairs medal alongside teammate Angel Velarte. The fifth gold was the work of cyclists Matias Medice, in the one-km time trial, with Colombia's Ibardo Mino winning silver and Chile's Jose Medina the bronze. At 6.00 p.m. local time, Argentina had garnered 83 medals, including 35 gold medals, 27 silver and 21 bronze. Brazil was second with 89 medals, but on 28 gold; Colombia was third with 52 medals, 21 of them gold; and Venezuela was fourth with 74 medals, but only 17 gold.
