Ochoa crowned LPGA player of the Year
(Xinhua)Updated: 2006-11-13 10:39 Mexican Lorena Ochoa clinched the LPGA Tour's player of the year award with her sixth victory of the season at the Tournament of Champions in Mobile, Alabama on Sunday. The 24-year-old fired a seven-under 65 to romp home by 10 shots with a record tournament aggregate of 21-under 267 at Magnolia Grove Golf Course. Five strokes clear after shooting a 63 in Saturday's third round, Ochoa signed off with a 12-foot par putt at the last to earn the winner's cheque for 150,000 US dollars and lift her season's earnings to 2,492,872 US dollars. "Winning this tournament is very special," Ochoa told reporters after reeling off five birdies in seven holes from the ninth. Americans Juli Inkster (68) and Paula Creamer (70) shared second place with compatriot Angela Stanford a further four shots back in fourth after closing with a 68. Ochoa won the player of the year award for the first time, ending a five-year reign by Swede Annika Sorenstam who was playing in this week's made-for-television Shark Shootout in Florida.
