NEW YORK, Nov 3 - Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Greg Maddux claimed a record equalling 16th Gold Glove while St Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols was awarded his first as the National League handed out defensive honours on Friday.

Maddux, who started last season with the Chicago Cubs before being traded to the Dodgers, ties Jim Kaat for the most Gold Gloves won by a pitcher or any other player.

Pujols, who helped the Cardinals to their first World Series championship in 24 years, shared honours with team mate third baseman Scott Rolen. It was Rolen's seventh Gold Glove.

The 2005 NL MVP, Pujols is one of the major league's most feared sluggers but also demonstrated he is one of baseball's leading fielders.

Other winners included, San Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel, whose fielding excellence was honoured for an 11th time, while New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran was another first-time winner.

Atlanta Braves centerfielder Andruw Jones collected a ninth consecutive Gold Glove while Houston Astros catcher Brad Ausmus and San Diego Padres centre fielder Mike Cameron both became three-time winners.

Arizona Diamondbacks' Orlando Hudson took second baseman honours.

Voting was done by managers and coaches before the end of the regular season.
