Baseball-Minnesota rookie sensation Liriano out for season(Reuters)Updated: 2006-11-04 17:17 NEW YORK, Nov 3 - Minnesota Twins rookie pitching sensation Francisco Liriano will undergo surgery on his left elbow and is expected to miss all of next season, the team announced on Friday. Liriano was scheduled for surgery on Monday in Los Angeles after his sore elbow failed to respond to treatment and therapy. "The therapy and the rehab didn't seem to be working," Twins general manager Terry Ryan told MLB.com. "Francisco continued to feel some soreness in there, so we're going to proceed with the surgery, and obviously he's going to miss next year." Liriano was enjoying a brilliant debut season with the Twins posting a 12-3 record with a 2.16 ERA until he began experiencing problems in his left elbow in August. The hard-throwing lefthander underwent therapy and returned to action on September 13 but lasted just two innings before leaving the game with elbow pain. "There wasn't any guarantee that he (Liriano) was going to be able to perform," said Ryan. "Today's decision just means we have finality here. "We need to move forward. We know we're not going to have him and we need to find some other people."
