Baseball-Two Tigers among winners of 2006 AL Gold Glove Awards
(Reuters)Updated: 2006-11-03 10:28 Pitcher Kenny Rogers and catcher Ivan Rodriguez of the American League champion Detroit Tigers were among the winners of the AL's Gold Glove Awards announced on Thursday. The Tigers were the only team to have two Gold Glove winners this season, as Rodriguez won his 12th award and Rogers won his fifth. Rogers was one of seven repeat winners this season, which featured three players picking up their sixth consecutive award. Oakland Athletics third baseman Eric Chavezand outfielders Torii Hunter of the Minnesota Twins and Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners are the players with six straight awards after winning again this season. Other 2006 winners for top defensive players included Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, and outfielder Vernon Wells of the Toronto Blue Jays. Kansas City Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek won his first Gold Glove in his first season in the AL. The awards are voted on by managers and coaches from the AL who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
