PHUKET, Thailand - Thailand hopes to improve on its performance at the last Asian Games by winning between 15 and 18 gold medals in Doha next month, although sports officials are optimistic the tally could reach 23.

The Kingdom, which finished sixth at the 2002 Games in South Korea's Pusan with 14 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze medals, hopes to win multiple golds in weightlifting, boxing, sepak takraw, tennis, wushu and taekwondo, the Nation newspaper reported.

The associations of 33 sports forecast a combined total of 23 gold medals in Doha, but Thailand's Asian Games committee scaled down the target to between 15 and 18.

"The Asian Games are not as easy as the SEA (Southeast Asian) Games, where we have been dominating for many years," Suravudh Maharom, who heads the committee, was quoted as saying.

"We will fare much better than Pusan."

The Asian Games take place in Doha, Qatar from December 1-15.
