Children as young as five could soon be working on their swing and practising their bunker shots in New York, set to host what is being billed as the United States' first golf course for kids.

The six-hole course, complete with training green, chipping area and practice bunker, is due to open for budding Tiger Woods types in Brooklyn late next year, according to the New York Daily News.

The six-million-dollar club also features a nine-station driving range and a clubhouse with classrooms for its five- to 17-year-old members. The course will sit in a 4.5 hectare (11 acre) site, the New York Times added.

"The bigger picture for us is, we serve thousands of kids in getting them started in golf, under-served neighbourhood kids who wouldn't otherwise play golf," the paper quoted Philip Craft from the City Parks Foundation behind the project as saying.

The centre is being funded by a combination of public and private money.
