BOSTON -- Ryan Gomes scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, and
Leon Powe added 11 points and 15 rebounds to rally the Boston Celtics over the
New Jersey Nets 94-90 in a preseason game Wednesday night.
The Celtics trailed 77-61 after three quarters and by as many as 23, but
outscored the Nets 33-13 in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-3 in the
preseason.
Vince Carter scored 23 points and Nenad Krstic added 21 for New Jersey (0-4).
Both sat out the fourth quarter.
After the Nets went up 85-77 on Jay Williams' jumper midway through the
fourth, Boston scored eight straight points and tied it at 85 on Gomes' layup
with 4:20 remaining.
Mikki Moore's free throw gave the Nets an 86-85 lead the next time down the
floor, but the Celtics took their first lead since the opening minute when a
layup by Gomes made it 87-86 with 3:35 remaining.
Gomes then scored on a dunk and a free throw to extend Boston's lead, and
Sebastian Telfair made a 19-foot jumper with 7 seconds left to ice it.
Williams, trying to make the Nets after a motorcycle accident nearly ended
his career three years ago, scored eight fourth-quarter points. But Tony Allen
and Gomes combined for 22 points in the period for Boston.
Paul Pierce scored 18 points in three quarters, Allen had 11 and Rajon Rondo
added 10 points and six assists for the Celtics.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers gave Wally Szczerbiak the game off, and Nets coach
Lawrence Frank rested Richard Jefferson.
Carter, who scored 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting Sunday after missing New
Jersey's first two preseason games with sore ribs, shot 6-of-16. He had nine
points in the first quarter to help the Nets jump out to a 27-14 lead.
