Peters, 46, was long the choice of former coach Juergen Klinsmann for the job of sporting director to create new structures and break up the association's set patterns. Klinsmann had hoped also to tap his technical expertise and talents as a motivator.

But Klinsmann was overruled by the DFB, which took on former Borussia Dortmund coach and Germany defender Matthias Sammer, who remains sport director.

The decision to ignore Klinsmann's wish in early 2006 was seen by many as a contributing factor to Klinsmann's decision not to extend his contract after the World Cup, where Germany defied dire forecasts and finished third.

Peters, who will also start a new job next month as sport director at regional club TSG Hoffenheim, will take part in the 10 to 15 DFB meetings each year and advise the association.
