Steve Alford's new boss gave him a new deal. Gary Barta extended Alford's contract by one year Thursday, keeping the men's basketball coach at Iowa in the fold through June 30, 2011.

Barta became Iowa's athletic director on August 1. Predecessor Bob Bowlsby had signed Alford to a one-year extension in June that also increased his salary and perks. The new extension only increases the length of the deal.

"I have met with Coach Alford several times since my arrival," Barta said.

"We've talked about our successes, about recruiting and I've had a chance to meet his new assistants and all of his student-athletes. We've also talked about challenges that have come up over the years and areas in which we need to improve.

"Steve is a good coach and a good person. He's committed to making himself and his program better. I look forward to working with him and his team in the years ahead."

Entering his eighth season as Iowa's coach, Alford guided the Hawkeyes to a 25-9 record and a Big Ten Conference tournament championship in 2005-06

Iowa won all 17 games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

There had been speculation Alford might return to his alma mater and coach Indiana when Mike Davis announced he would not be returning, but the Hoosiers opted for Kelvin Sampson on March 29.
