BARUERI, Brazil _ The two-time defending champion United States crushed
France 76-41 in the second round to remain unbeaten at the women's world
basketball championship on Sunday.
Diana Taurasi led the U.S. with 15 points and Tina Thompson added 12 to
guarantee a last-eight berth.
The victory pushed the Americans' world championship winning streak, which
dates to the 1994 bronze-medal game, to 24, and also extended the string of
victories in the Olympics and worlds to 48.
The Americans face the European champion Czech Republic on Monday to decide
the winner in Group F. With the top four advancing to the quarterfinals, the
Americans have 8 points, the Czechs 7, France 6, then Russia, Cuba and China
with 5 each.
The Czechs edged Russia 85-83 with 25 points from Eva Viteckova, and China
beat Cuba 73-70.
Australia remain the only other unbeaten team and also secured a
quarterfinals spot after frustrating host Brazil 82-73. Penny Taylor and Lauren
Jackson combined for 48 points and 20 rebounds.
Brazil veteran Janeth, who scored a team-high 22, said she may be making her
last appearance for Brazil.
"We still have one game to play," Janeth said, referring to Monday's match
with France to decide a berth in the quarters.
Lithuania dominated Argentina 62-47, and Spain trounced Canada 85-57.
Australia tops Group E with 8 points, two more than Argentina, Brazil,
Lithuania and Spain. Canada has 4.
