SAITAMA (FIBA World
Championship) - Serkan Erdogan has been one of Turkey's bright stars in the 2006
FIBA World Championship, putting on a great display against Slovenia to lift the
team to their best result in the competition of ninth place at Indianapolis four
years ago.
Erdogan went for 24 points in a 90-84 defeat of Ales Pipan's side, including
15 in the last period when Turkey finished on a 16-5 run in the last 3:38 to
steal a win and set up a quarter-final encounter with Argentina.
Turkey had a tough time against the Olympic champions earlier today, falling
83-58, but they now turn their attention to the classification games, where they
could aim for a fifth-place finish.
FIBA correspondent Simon Wilkinson caught up with Erdogan after the game
against Argentina.
FIBA: Can you talk about how the team's performance in this tournament?
Erdogan: We played very well up until today. It has been a great experience
for us. We had some injured players but we overcame that by playing as a team
throughout.
FIBA: Do you feel you could have played better today?
Erdogan: Yes, there's no doubt about it. We were going up against one of the
best teams in the world and for some reason we didn't play the way that we
usually do and we lost quite heavily.
FIBA: So can you immediately turn your attention to the classification games?
Erdogan: Yes we have another goal. We want to finish this tournament in fifth
place and so we have to bounce back from this tragic loss right away.
FIBA: You had a great tournament yourself and no doubt the team was helped by
that but also it was hurt by player injuries.
Erdogan: I just wish that everyone had been able to play healthy because when
somebody got injured, other players needed to step up and that took a lot of
energy so I think we got very tired.
FIBA: Do you think that the outcome of the game might have been different if
you'd had a full and healthy team?
Erdogan: As I say we need to have a full team to play against a team of this
calibre. So today we really had no chance because we played really bad.
FIBA: So did that change the way you approached it? Did you still go out and
try to win or was it just the experience of it?
Erdogan: We came out wanting to win this game there's no doubt about it
because this is a quarter final in a world championship and you can't really say
what the result is going to be. But I definitely did not expect this
kind of
heavy loss.
FIBA: Can you compare Turkey's team today to that of last year's Eurobasket
and the atmosphere within the side?
Erdogan: There's a huge difference in our approach, our character. We have to
keep developing the good atmosphere that we have in the team.
FIBA: Is today's result a step in the right direction for Turkey basketball?
Erdogan: Yes it definitely is. The loss is hard to swallow but the experience
of the quarter-finals is very valuable for the future. We will bounce back from
the defeat in time for the classification games and we want
that fifth
place. There's a huge difference between fifth and eighth.
FIBA: Can you talk quickly of Argentina?
Erdogan: There's not much to say that hasn't been said before. They're a
great team with great players who have been playing together for a long time and
that's the key to their success.
