SAITAMA (FIBA World Championship) - The United States breezed into the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIBA World Championship while hard-fought victories by Germany and France meant the end of Africa's campaign, and Greece remained undefeated.

Team USA used their stifling defense to hold Australia without a field goal for more than seven minutes in the second quarter in a convincing 113-73 win - the Americans' sixth straight at the tournament.

Carmelo Anthony paced Mike Krzyzewski's team with 20 points while Joe Johnson added 18 off the bench. Andrew Bogut scored 20 points in a losing cause.

"We just picked up our energy in the second quarter. We haven't really got off to good starts these past few games. But we came out in the second period, picking up our defensive intensity and started making easy plays and getting easy baskets," Johnson said.
The Americans now have a quarter-final date with Germany on Wednesday.

The 2002 bronze medalists survived a poor shooting night from Dirk Nowitzki to hold off Nigeria 78-77. Nowitzki scored a game-high 23 points and had nine rebounds but only made seven of 18 shots from the field. Ademola Okulaja collected 19 points against his native Nigeria and combined with Nowitzki in scoring Germany's final 20 points of the game.

Nowitzki gave Germany a 78-71 lead on a break-away dunk with 2:33 to go. But those would be the final points the Germans would score.

Ekene Ibekwe, who scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, slammed home a missed shot with 1:33 remaining before Chamberlain Oguchi and Tunji Awojobi combined for three free throws to pull within 78-77.

Better known as a game-decider on the offensive end, Nowitzki saved his team on defense this time, getting a piece of Ime Udoka's driving layup attempt with one second left to play to secure the victory.

The other teams to advance to the quarter-finals were France and Greece.

Aymeric Jeanneau's six free throws in the final 36 seconds and a game-high 16 points secured France a 68-62 victory against African champions Angola.

Jeanneau added five assists in playing his best game since replacing Tony Parker as the head of the French attack. Boris Diaw and Mickael Gelabale each hit a number of big shots as they both finished with 14 points.

Angola's loss, combined with Germany's defeat of Nigeria, leaves the FIBA World Championship without an African side in the quarter-finals. Angola leaves the tournament after having impressed for the third straight game against a big-time European team. In their last two matches, Angola gave Spain and Germany all they could handle.

France did an excellent job of shutting down Angola's big gun as Joaquim Gomes had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Olimpio Cipriano made just five of 18 shots in scoring 12 points.

France now have a re-match with Greece of the 2005 EuroBasket semi-final.

The 2005 European champions Greece made three of their first 19 shots but came back to hit 14 of the next 17 in dominating China 95-64.

Theodoros Papaloukas led the undefeated Greeks with 19 points while Vasilis Spanoulis hit for 15. The Greeks' ferocious team defense held Yao Ming to just 10 points.

The FIBA World Championship has an off-day on Monday before the quarter-finals begin on Tuesday.
