Lithuania beats sloppy Australia 78-57 (AP) Updated: 2006-08-23 15:10
Guard Aryvdas Macijauskas scored 20 points and Lithuania edged closer to a
second-round berth at the world basketball championship with a 78-57 win
Wednesday over Australia.
Australia, 1-3, played poorly throughout the game and will be hard-pressed to
make the second round from Group C. It plays its final group game Thursday
against winless Qatar.
The lopsided score won't help Australia _ if teams finish with identical
records, point differentials are used to help break the tie. Lithuania is 2-2.
Brad Newley scored 15 points for Australia and Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew
Bogut added 12.
Australia trailed 35-28 at halftime and thoroughly deserved to, making only
seven of 13 from the free-throw line and turning the ball over 17 times.
Lithuania wasn't much better, shooting only two for 11 from 3-point range,
having 10 turnovers and missing at least three easy layups.
At one point, the teams scored only three points in five minutes _ the last
three minutes of the first quarter and the first two minutes of the second.
Lithuania's edge by halftime came when they penetrated Australia's zone
defense and got the ball inside to forward Darius Songaila, who scored eight
first-half points. He finished with 14.
Lithuania takes on Brazil in its final group game Thursday.
