SENDAI, Japan -- Walter Herrmann scored 23 points and Luis Scola added 18
Sunday to lead Argentina to a 107-72 win over Lebanon at the world basketball
championships.
Argentina (2-0), runner-up at the 2002 world championship in Indianapolis,
took control early with a 29-9 lead after the opening period.
NBA stars Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs and Andres Nocioni of the
Chicago Bulls were used sparingly by coach Sergio Hernandez. Ginobili, who had
25 points in Argentina's win over France on Saturday, finished with seven points
in 15 minutes. Nocioni also had seven points in 18 minutes.
"I'm happy because we had a big win over France on Saturday and we played
with great concentration today," said Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez. "Even
though we had a big lead we continued to play hard."
Midway through the second period, Carlos Delfino stole the ball at center
court and went in for a reverse dunk to give Argentina a 39-17 lead. Delfino hit
a 3-pointer with 2 minutes left to make it 101-68.
Lebanon (1-1) won its opening game 82-72 over Venezuela but was no match for
the Olympic champions, who widened the lead to 80-51 heading into the final
period.
"Today was a tricky game," Lebanon's American coach Paul Coughter said. "I
tried to use all my guys and today's game as a practice session without getting
humiliated."
Lebanon lost all five games at the 2002 worlds and Coughter said his team
still has three chances to qualify for the second round of this tournament.
"We have a window of opportunity," Coughter said. "The first one will be
tomorrow against Serbia-Montenegro and they aren't the team they were four years
ago."
